How to Deal with the High Temperature of Bearings?

Excessive bearing temperature is a common and hazardous failure of rotating equipment, which reduces bearing life and increases maintenance costs. When the temperature rises rapidly and exceeds the standard temperature, it is easy to cause unplanned downtime or reduce the load operation of the equipment. Such failures have a great impact on economic benefits. Therefore, quickly determining the cause of the failure and taking appropriate measures to solve it is the guarantee to ensure the continuous and safe operation of the equipment.

1. Common causes of excessive bearing temperature

(1) Poor lubrication, such as insufficient or excessive lubrication, the quality of the lubricant does not meet the requirements.

(2) Insufficient cooling, such as blocked pipes, improper selection of coolers, and poor cooling effect.

(3) The bearings are abnormal, such as bearing damage, poor bearing assembly process, and the clearance adjustment of each part of the bearing box does not meet the requirements.

(4) The vibration is large. For example, if the coupling process is not correct, the rotor will have dynamic, static imbalances and poor foundation stiffness.

2. When the bearing temperature is high, the problem should be solved from the following aspects

(1) Incorrect amount of oil, too little or too much oil

The bearing housing should be regularly refueled according to the work requirements. After the bearing is oiled, the temperature is sometimes higher, mainly due to excessive oiling. At this time, the phenomenon is that the temperature continues to rise continuously. After a certain point (usually about 10°C to 15°C above normal operating temperature) it will stay the same and then gradually decrease.

(2) The grease added to the bearing does not meet the requirements or is contaminated

The selection of lubricating grease is not suitable, it is not easy to form a uniform lubricating oil film, it is impossible to reduce the internal friction and wear of the bearing, the lubrication is insufficient, and the bearing temperature rises. When mixing different types of grease, a chemical reaction can occur, causing the grease to deteriorate and agglomerate, reducing lubrication effectiveness. Contaminated grease also increases bearing temperatures. Dust can fall into the grease addition process, which can lead to grease contamination. This will cause the internal grease of the bearing housing to deteriorate and damage the bearing lubrication, and the temperature will rise.

Therefore, an appropriate grease should be selected. During maintenance, the bearing housings and bearings should be cleaned, and the refueling lines should be inspected and cleaned. Do not mix different types of grease. If you are changing to another type of grease, the original grease should be removed first; during operation and maintenance, periodically add grease, and grease should be stored properly to prevent moisture and dust.

(3) Insufficient heat dissipation

Check whether the pipes are blocked, and whether the inlet water temperature and return water temperature exceed the standard. If the cooler is not selected correctly and the cooling effect cannot meet the requirements, the cooler should be replaced in time, or a new cooler should be installed in parallel. Axial induced draft fans should also check the insulation and sealing of the iron core.

(4) After confirming that the above problems do not exist, check the alignment and bearing of the coupling

Couplings must be aligned to workmanship standards. The amount of reserve depends on the characteristics of the equipment and the temperature parameters during operation.
